The Grapes of Wrath Travel Journal (Chapters 1-10, H)

"I says, 'What's this call, this sperit? An' I says, 'It's love. I love people so much I'm fit to bust, sometimes' An I says, 'Don't you love Jesus?' Well, I thought an' thought an' finally I says, 'No, I don't know nobody name' Jesus. I know a bunch of stories, but I only love people. An' sometimes I love 'em to fit to bust, an' I want to make 'em happy, so I been preachin' somepin I thought would make 'em happy.'" (23) (Reverend Jim Casy)
This repetition contributes to the description of the text because it emphasizes the self-assurance of Jim Casy. He constantly repeats himself with "I says", displaying his confidence in himself and his philosophy about his beliefs. He has confidently developed a theory about religion and asserts it with his repetition. In a couple instances, he also says that he wants to "make 'em happy". He repeats himself, which contributes to the description as we get a sense of Casy's intentions. The repetition provides a personal perspective of the Reverend. The repetition expresses how Casy is speaking from his heart about what he truly believes. The description comes alive to the audience as they are able to feel the passion in the words of Jim Casy.
